El Shaddai

El Shaddai: Ascension Metatron is a platforming action game developed and published by Ignition Entertainment. Although the focus Ignition particularly focused on the handheld gaming market, they have made a splash a lot of Twin Peaks published console title inspired hunch Deadly underground. Excessive bad game every survival horror game ever and the only saving grace-bending plot protagonist’s mind has been talking to a friend fantasy / alternate personality named “Zach.” Although different from the El Shaddai in almost every way, both games share one thing in common. Both deal with issues and innovative at the same time, though with varying degrees of success.

For most players, El Shaddai are both very common action and platforming games unique. The will soon be known by fans of games like Lord of War or Castlevaina: Lord of Shadows. Here is a platform. Up. Here’s a switch. Flip it. Here is a room full of bad people. Bring them out. Weapons you be filled with the spirits of darkness that you slaughter. Cleaning it up. Um, the last might just be true. Also new is that the game with a weight of 2-D platforming segments are usually round 3-dimensional battles.

If the game showed the true originality, however, in the direction of play and environmental design. Not a lot of the design stage, because most areas are quite linear affairs, but the environment itself. From the background set pieces, El Shaddai is a stunning beauty. And do not the bleeding edge graphics, ultra-realistic kind of way either, most games seem to have given the PS2. Games that do not trickle art is usually seen in many video game titles. Takeyasu Sawaki, the main developer of this game, as well as character designer for Okami and influence can be seen here. In fact, taking Okami, throw in some Tron, and add a touch of psychedelia (happening this time Bob concert posters may be) and maybe you have an idea what to expect here.

Plot of the game is a novel in which it borrowed from sources that are not usually mined in the arena of video games. Although the game is based on Roman mythology, or sci-fi is normal, El Shaddai is one of the few games set in the Mythos Bible, with all the major players come with (Angel, Devil, God, Satan, and others. ). In the game, you play as Enoch, people chosen by God to find and imprison the seven fallen angels. Lucifel, agent of the Lord will guide you, and the four archangels, Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael and Michael, will give their power in your mission. Although rich in biblical tradition, the game does not claim to be anything but fiction. El Shaddai longer separates the true story of the Bible by loosely bases the plot on the Book of Enoch, the apocryphal books are not included in the texts used by most Bible-based religion, and is widely considered non-canonical by Jews and Christians alike .

Of course, some players do not care who they fight, or where they fight, as long as a good battle. And despite all the good enough early on, the battle that began after a little stale. There was only one attack button, with several combinations depending on the time you or do you prevent or jump in at any time is limited. “Purifies” devices quickly become your weapon as a weapon-clean work will produce maximum damage. The ability to disarm at the same time your enemy and / cleaning weapons does not help reduce the need to clean the middle of the battle, however. However, in games like this, it all boils down to the fight, and I found this one of a small deficiency.

All in all, the aesthetic and vision of the game is really worth the price of admission. Innovative appearance and feel the game breath of fresh air for the genre, and fans of games like ICO and Okami are the most likely to fully appreciate the El Shaddai. From the perspective of the game, however, I think the battle is tepid and held the action platformer back from the greatness of Ignition Entertainment. Although the beautiful game, El Shaddai is behind a standout in the genre.
